Marae Trip by Asher

Our Marae Trip

The day finally came on October 26th
When we went to orakei marae.
We hopped on the bus and off we went.

Later on we got to the marae and it was around 10:30.
We were a little early. Then a lady walked in and said “My name is Whaea Celeste.wow you guys are early. I will call the people in the marae that you're ready and we will start the powhiri.”
We walked out of the room and towards the marae. My heart was beating with excitement when I saw the marae.

And there was Whaea Celeste doing the kaikaranga in front of the marae.
Then Zoe did our kaikaranga.
After that I spoke as the whaikorero and we sang a song. Then we had a two minute play time outside. After that a man called Matua Paul taught us about names of the houses around the area. Then we had a lunch break in the same room that we came in at the first place.
After that we made some flax bracelets. Oh oh, I feel sick.
I told mum to text dad to pick me up.
Eventually dad got here to pick me up.
I told my teacher and off we went.

Trip to Orakei Marae by Julie

On Wednesday we went to the Orakei Marae! We hopped on the bus and I shared a seat with Emma and Monique. “We’re all so squished!” I complained. “Right, everyone go on the bus behind us!” Miss Steptoe called. “What now?” Monique grumbled” But we all did it anyway. I ended up next to Alex and Iris, but all the same I still had fun playing cards.

Finally(and I mean finally), we arrived at the Marae. A lady called whaea Celeste showed us our eating place and we all dumped our bags there and we all settled down to listen to her speech.

Next, we were welcomed onto the Marae with a formal Powhiri with Zoe as the caller and Asher as the speaker. We took off our shoes and entered the Marae. Then we did the Hongi, and  they spoke their speeches, but they were very interesting and fun too! Then it was morning tea and we all ran off to eat and play.

Later on we made bangles out of flax by weaving. This was my favourite part! While whaea Bernie taught the adults  so they could teach the kids, Whaea Celeste told us about a fire burned down all the detail and description on the carvings. Then Whaea Bernie sorted us into groups and I was put into Miss Steptoe’s group along with Oscar,Nathan,Hayley and Sarah. I made a thick,  multicolored bangle, and even though I needed some help at the start it was still so fun!

Afterwards we ate our lunch and played outside. I played 44 homes with Emma, Monique, Iris, Nishita, Sebastian and Brooke.

“Hello everyone! Good to see you again,”  Whaea Celeste greeted us as we came in.She taught us adance in maori and us some history about a fire that burnt down the houses in the village that she lived in when she was a kid.

Finally, we we went back to school on the bus. I couldn’t wait for the next trip!

Powhiri at Orakei Marae

This video shows you our Powhiri (welcoming ceremony) to the Orakei Marae.  We were welcomed on by their Kaikaranga (caller).  Zoe was our caller for the manuhiri (visitors) she would reply back to them.  It was an amazing experience and for many of the students their first experience in an actual powhiri ceremony and being on the marae.  Thanks to Whaea Celeste and many of the tutors that helped deepen our understanding of marae protocol, their history and arts.

My Trip to the Marae by Emma

 My trip to the Marae

Kia ora

Yesterday I was so lucky to go on a trip to a Marae with my class. The marae was at Orakei.

We took a bus to the Marae. When we came to the Marae we got welcomed by a woman whose name was Whaea Bernie.

She let us into a room where we put our bags and then we sat down  on the carpet.she told us about herself and the family.
Finally we went into the Marae.

Just before we walked in Zoe sang the Karanga to welcome us in. It was really beautiful!

Finally… finally… finally we walked into the Marae  I felt really excited!
It was really beautiful Inside the Marae.I felt really excited!
It was really beautiful inside the Marae!we sat down.

Next it was Asher’s part to speak.
He said his mihi to us. I was so glad that I didn’t have to do it because there wore so many people! He did a very good job!

Then it was time to have Morning tea.
We ate our morning tea and then we had five minutes to play.

Soon after we were back in the Marae once again but this time it was different! This time we had to do some weaving.

We wove some bracelets out of flax!
It was really fun! I thought it was easy. I made two bracelets.

Right after we had finished it was lunch time! I thought it was a bit early for lunch.

After lunch we went in to the Marae and sat down once again. Then Matua Paul and Whaea Bernie talked about the Maori culture. It was really interesting!

Finally the bus came and we set of home. I would had liked to stay a bit longer!

It had been a wonderful trip to the Marae!

My favourite thing was weaving the bracelets.
